PAIRINGS - Textile Heritage
In 2021, I was awarded a Glossop Creates PAIRINGS residency, a programme that pairs local artists with a local issue. Glossop has a rich textile heritage and little is known or celebrated in Glossop and the wider area. In particular, the work of Edmund Potter who owned Dinting Vale Printworks, the world’s largest calico printworks. He was also the paternal grandfather of author Beatrix Potter.

The PAIRINGS residency enabled me to initiate new connections . I have connected with Kate Raine, Archivist & Historian, Glossop Heritage Trust and Sarah Chubb, Archives & Local Studies Manager, Derbyshire records office, both of whom are committed to tell the story of Edmund Potter & Dinting Vale Printworks. I have been lucky enough to delve into some of the collections and archives and hope to find out more about Glossop's Textile heritage through more of these resources.

My PAIRINGS residency concluded as part of the Heritage Open Day in September 2021 at Glossop’s Victoria Hall. Displaying my research findings, I welcomed feedback from the Glossop community. There was interest from the community to hear more about this research, and locals were keen to share their DVP experiences, personal photos, and employee documents.

I intend to keep working on this and would love to creatively respond to his research through my print practice.
